What to Know About Shirodhara
Shirodhara (shee-ro-dah-rah) is an Ayurvedic therapy in which warm oil is gently poured in a continuous stream across the forehead onto the ajna chakra, or “third eye.” The practice is designed to quiet the mind, balance the nervous system, and induce deep relaxation.
Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that began in India more than 3,000 years ago. Ayurveda means “the study of life.” It takes a natural approach to all aspects of health and well-being. Massage is one of many Ayurvedic practices and usually involves warm herbal oils to relieve pain and stiffness. Other Ayurvedic practices that support balance include yoga, meditation, detoxification, and herbal medicine.
Origins & Purpose
Shirodhara is recommended for stress, insomnia, tension headaches, anxiety, overactive thinking, and emotional overwhelm. Today, people often book Shirodhara when they want a deeply restorative experience that calms the body and softens mental clutter.
My Experience at The Woodhouse Spa
I visited The Woodhouse Spa in Grand Rapids for a 50-minute Shirodhara treatment with a gift card from my husband. I’ve often used his thoughtful gift cards for massages, but I decided to try a new service to ease into a busy holiday week. Shirodhara ended up being an unexpectedly perfect way to disconnect and reset.
The Treatment
Similar to a massage, the service takes place on a table within a cozy treatment room. I was a bit intimidated by the oil vessel situated over the head of the table, and I even “braced” for the feeling of oil hitting my face.
Shirodhara began with warm oil dripping slowly onto my third eye. The sensation was surprisingly light, rhythmic, and soothing.
As the oil streamed from the vessel, my practitioner gently brushed through my hair and gave a soft, intentional scalp massage. Once the oil was fully released, she moved into a thorough neck and shoulder massage, melting months of unaddressed tension and terrible posture.
Next, I flipped onto my stomach for a back massage that worked out stubborn knots, followed by grounding touches. She placed a warm cloth over my feet and a heated weighted pillow along my spine while massaging the neck and shoulders. The only untouched parts are the legs and arms.
The warmth, pressure, and scent created a deeply comforting and restorative escape. I could have stayed another hour – or two, but sadly the time came to a close.
Afterward, she handed me the brush she used, and I was able to rinse the oil off in the shower before leaving.
This is easily one of the most meditative treatments I’ve had in Grand Rapids. I plan to book Shirodhara and a deep-tissue massage with future spa gift cards.
